How many ways are there to see one woman? And how does one woman’s look
and persona transform as she’s viewed by 15 strangers? During the past
three months, 15 ABQ and Santa Fe photographers were offered a single
subject — local professional model Stephanie Anne — to be shot
in the location and situation of the photographer’s choosing. From
intimate studio settings to environmental sites, selected photographers
subsequently posed Anne in many diverse circumstances using a wide
variety of props.
The result is 1 x 15: One Model, Fifteen Photographers, a curious and locally unprecedented exhibit to be presented by Matrix Fine Arts throughout the month of January. Selected photographers have been given the opportunity to exude their individual perspectives on a single subject — essentially what they do on a daily basis, with a maximum of two submissions per artist.
The show, which keenly features both full-time photographers and fresh-faced amateurs, includes the works of 1 x 15 curator Pat Barrett and Local iQ staff photographer Wes Naman, as well as Nolan Rudi, Susan Graham, Bob Thornburg, Katie Price and eight others. The overall purpose of the exhibit, according to Barrett, is to show that photographs are not simply the sum of subject plus setting plus props, but rather the embodiment of the photographer’s style, personality, opinion and perspective. In this respect, perhaps photography can be seen for what it is: fine art.
