Wildlife West Nature Park and Sandia Mountain BearWatch are teaming together to host an educational and fun day to celebrate the largest animal that lives in the Sandia Mountains ─ the black bear. Visitors will get a close-up, behind the scenes tour of Koshari, a 350 pound black bear, and his habitat that was build entirely by youth in 2005.
The goal of the fair is to provide information about how to co-exist with black bears and other wildlife that reside in the East Mountains, and how to protect their habitat. With recent black bear encounters making headlines, this is a perfect opportunity to learn more about this magnificent animal. Come learn from experts in the field, who will share their experiences around bears, and how to safely camp and hike in bear country. Learn from representatives of the two sponsoring organizations, as well as from the University of New Mexico’s Wild Friends, Friends of the Sandia Mountains, Ed Kandle from The Bears, New Mexico Game and Fish, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Prairie Dog Pals, Rio Grande Basin Bat project and other exhibitors. Wolf expert, Elke Duer, will also be on hand at the endangered Mexican wolf habitat with wolf skulls, skeletal parts and information about this endangered species.
Free hayrides and hot dogs will be offered throughout the day with regular admission to the Park. Come early and stay for the evening chuckwagon barbeque and western music concert starting at 7 to 9 p.m. Reservations for the chuckwagon are required by 2 p.m. on the day of the show.
