Late ’90s Albuquerque punk rock was ruled by the lo-fi garage trash of The Drags and Scared of Chaka, who each made a name for themselves on a nationwide level. It was only a matter of time before the rest of the world got hip. But it was recent local high-school grads The Rondelles, who caught the attention of Steve Shelley’s Smells Like Records (circa 1998).
Fusing twee pop with sharp lyrics, the group quickly
rose to underground fame. By 2000, the group, consisting of Juliet
Swango (guitar/vocals), Yukiko Moynihan (bass), and Oakley Munson
(drums/keyboards), found themselves opening for Shelley’s band Sonic
Youth and selling records worldwide. Unfortunately, the band decided to
call it quits, but proved big enough to create a buzz, shed a spotlight
on Albuquerque’s music scene (despite moving to Washington, D.C.). This
one-time, mini-reunion is sure to grab the attention of diehard fans
across the country — many of whom are probably booking flights to ABQ
as you read this.
